The Middle County School District will be giving free heart screenings to children Saturday three months following the death of a football player.
Newfield High School football player Robert Bush collapsed and died during a workout in July.
The screenings over the weekend include simple tests like an EKG and blood pressure.
They are being offered by the Acampora Foundation. President of the foundation, Karen Acampora, lost her son due to a blow to the heart while playing lacrosse. She says heart problems in children can be hard to spot.
“And it’s usually hereditary and no signs or symptoms,” Acampora says. “Or if there are symptoms as a kid, you may not know to talk about it.”
Over 400 Middle County athletes will be screened on Saturday. There are no appointments left.
