Fundraising efforts underway for Metuchen fire that displaced over 20 people

Multiple fundraisers are underway after a fire erupted at an apartment in Metuchen on Saturday leaving two people hospitalized and more than 20 people displaced.
Red Cross says it’s helping seven families who were affected by the fire at Building 8 at the Redfield Apartment Complex with emergency assistance for temporary housing, food and clothing.
One of the two people taken to the hospital following the fire is expected to be OK, according to Metuchen Mayor Jonathan Busch.
Fundraising efforts led to a 5K run. Proceeds will directly benefit affected families.
Residents in the borough also stepped up to help their neighbors. "It Takes a Borough,” known as Metuchen's homegrown nonprofit, serves as a general fund for situations like Saturday's fire. In just over a day, the nonprofit raised more than $18,000. Volunteers say clothing is the most needed item right now.
Community help will continue on Sunday as proceeds from a 5K race in Metuchen will also be donated to the cause.
Affected families have been given hotel rooms. It’s still unknown if any part of the apartment building may be safe to eventually return to.
