Police say an anonymous tip led them to the driver who they say fled the scene of a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a teenager Saturday.
According to police, 19-year-old Michael Weimann, of Farmingville, pulled his car into a gas station on Route 25A after his vehicle became disabled around 2 a.m. Weimann walked across the road but then crossed back after he saw his car was on fire. Police say he was then hit by a Ford Escort, which fled the scene. Weimann was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries.
Police received an anonymous tip about an hour after the accident saying they could find the car involved on Newport Avenue in Medford. Police found the damaged vehicle and the driver, 29-year old William Haberstroh, admitted to being in the accident and to having been at two bars beforehand. Haberstoh was charged with DWI and leaving the scene of a fatal accident. Police are looking for the person who made the anonymous call.
