An 18-year-old male has been shot in Hempstead, and a suspect is in custody, according to Hempstead police.

The shooting happened at 3:22 p.m. on Tyler Avenue. The crime scene was across the street from Hempstead High School.

Investigators say neither the victim, nor the suspected shooter are students.

After-school activities were canceled following the incident, and a lockdown was in place for about 45 minutes. Students had already been dismissed for the day at the time of the shooting.

A witness reported hearing four or five shots. Police responded to a ShotSpotter alert and multiple 911 calls.

The victim was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive. The motive for the shooting is not known.

Police have not released the identities of the suspect or the victim.
