A Mastic man could face up to seven years in prison after a jury convicted him of choking an 8‑month‑old baby in his care.

Amar Corbin, 25, had been watching the infant on the night of May 13, 2025. Prosecutors say that while caring for the child, Corbin was drinking and became increasingly angry during an argument with his then-girlfriend over the phone.

The next morning, the child’s mother noticed injuries to the baby’s face and chest and rushed the infant to Stony Brook University Hospital.

Prosecutors say a forensic nurse examiner determined the child had been strangled and a child abuse pediatrician also found injuries consistent with blunt force pressure to the baby’s face and chest.

Medical experts documented bruising on the infant’s cheeks in the shape of a handprint, along with broken blood vessels on the face and upper body. They testified that the ruptured blood vessels were caused by significant pressure applied to the face and chest.

Corbin is scheduled to return to court for sentencing on July 28, where he faces a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison.
