An Islip man who was planning a cross-country bicycle ride was shot to death by a man and an accomplice in North Carolina last week, police say.
Authorities say Mark Boyd, 32, missed his bus connection in Fayetteville, North Carolina late Thursday night. They say he met a man who offered him a place to sleep for the evening. Instead, police say, he was driven out to a secluded area where he was shot to death and robbed of his bike and camping gear.
Boyd had been planning to ride to the West Coast which was expected to take several months.
Fayetteville police said they arrested two local men, Carlos Jacob Engle, 32, and Deshavonte Kemp, 19, and charged them with first-degree murder.
Boyd was a graduate of Islip High School in 2000.
A wake is set for Wednesday at Chapey and Sons Funeral Home from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. A funeral service will be held Thursday at St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Church in Bay Shore.
