Police say a man stole four exotic birds from a Mineola pet shop over the weekend, putting the animals? lives in danger.
The man allegedly stole three baby sun conures and a white cockatiel. According to police, the man swiped the sun conures by stuffing them into his jacket pocket. The birds are about 7 weeks old and have especially fragile digestive tracts.
Owner of For Birds Only, Ida Ferriera, says when she noticed the birds missing from her business, she suspected a man who had been hanging around the store. She says she checked her store?s surveillance camera, which confirmed her suspicion.
Police say the four birds are valued at almost $1,500. Ferriera says she is concerned for the health and safety of the baby birds as they still need to be hand-fed.
Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
