A man is the latest person to die in a Southern State Parkway crash, which police are investigating.
Police say the 39-year-old was heading east when his SUV hit a guardrail, a hill and then slammed into a bridge by exit 21 in Roosevelt early Sunday. The wreck is the latest in a string that News 12 Long Island has reported on in the past 10 months.
A crash by exit 20 killed three people in February. Another crash in the same area claimed one life. Fatal accidents also occurred in North Bellmore and Lakeview. Last month, a wrong-way driver was charged with drunk driving in a fatal crash in Valley Stream.
The wrecks have led to some locals calling the roadway "Blood Alley."
Robert Sinclair, of AAA, says the parkway simply isn't equipped to handle today's drivers. "It's really engineered for slow-speed travel. When this road opened, it was hard-pressed for a car to do 50 miles an hour," Sinclair said.
Police say a lack of skid marks in Sunday's crash may mean the driver fell asleep or had a medical emergency. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
