Police arrested and charged 35-year-old Albert Torres, of Sunset Park, after they said a husband and wife were stabbed inside of their Bergen Beach home, leaving the husband dead and the wife fighting for her life.
Sources said Torres is believed to be the couple’s son-in-law.
It happened around 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the corner of East 69th Street and Avenue M.
Sources told News 12 that police received multiple 911 calls, including one from the victims’ daughter who said her mother was “breathing hard.” Sources said other 911 calls came in saying the attacker was still inside of the house, threatening to hurt a niece who was there.
Police said officers arrived and found the husband and wife – both 49 years old -- on the first floor with multiple stab wounds.
The husband, identified by police as Juan Manuel Galicia, died from his injuries.
His wife remains in critical condition.
Neighbors told News 12 that they’re in disbelief.
"I saw a woman walking around and then an ambulance pulled up and a firetruck,” said one woman, who asked not to be identified. “She was on her phone, hysterical. They put her in the back of an ambulance and then I saw a bunch of EMS run into the home."
“[It is] very quiet here,” said Henry Chan, of Bergen Beach. “We’ve been here 20 years and never came across something like this, so it’s really shocking.”
Torres is charged with murder and attempted murder.
