A rare sentence was handed down to a Nassau man who admitted to selling animals for dogfighting.

Lonnie Poindexter was sentenced to six months behind bars for breeding and selling pit bulls for dogfighting.

“It is very significant because often times we don't get a jail sentence along with an animal cruelty case," said Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly.

The 56-year-old pleaded guilty back in September, and six pit bulls recovered from his home.

According to the DA's office, Poindexter was posting these dogs for sale online and used code words in the dogfighting community.

Poindexter will also serve five years’ probation when he is released from jail.
