The man accused of driving drunk, slamming into a taxi and then running from the scene of the fatal crash was ordered held without bail by a judge Sunday.

Police say Duke Obule was speeding in a 2016 BMW on Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square Saturday when he slammed into taxi driven by a 47-year-old Elmont man. The taxi was pushed across two lanes of traffic, up onto a sidewalk and was pinned against a utility pole. The taxi driver was pronounced dead.

The identity of the taxi driver has not yet been released. News 12 is told he is the father of two young children. He worked at Ollie's Taxi Service for three years, the company says.

Police say Obule fled the scene on foot, leaving behind a female passenger in his car who fractured her ankle in the crash. Obule was found down the road and was taken into custody.

Officials say Obule's blood alcohol level was at 0.16 percent about an hour after the crash, which is twice the legal limit.

He was arraigned Sunday on multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, vehicular assault, DWI, leaving the scene of a fatal accident and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

Obule, of Queens, pleaded not guilty at First District Court in Hempstead, and a judge ordered him held without bail. He is due back in court next week.

News 12 spoke to Obule's attorney by phone, who said his client was "quite upset" about what happened.
