Riesterer's Bakery, a West Hempstead staple known for it's sweet treats and family tradition since 1931, is one of Long Island's oldest bakeries.
"We have been in this exact location for 94 years. Started by my grandfather in October 1931," said Karl W. Riesterer, owner of Riesterer's Bakery.
Riesterer is now the third generation to run it, after his father, also named Karl. The bakery is famous for its customized gingerbread houses. They make 1,000 pounds of gingerbread a day. They also ship out their gingerbread to other bakeries.
"This year, we're on target for 40,000 houses," said Riesterer. Riesterer says it’s special to work side by side with his dad still.
"I am so happy he is doing it, and I hope he can continue," said Karl Riesterer Sr.
Now a fourth generation is helping out with the baking operation.
