Smithtown students were met with a blast from the past for the start of the new school year.

Two athletic trainers found a time capsule that was supposed to be opened in 2017 inside a storage room.

The capsule had photos, old school banners and other relics ranging from 1973 to 1992.

"As things change, they stay the same, right? Prom, graduation t-shirts, banners, pom-poms, we're still doing all these things but it's cool to see how they've evolved,” said principal William Holl.

Holl says staff plans on displaying the items outside so students can see their school’s history.
