Gov. Kathy Hochul and Shirley Rep. Lee Zeldin went head to head in the first and likely only debate in the New York governor race on Tuesday.
The candidates spoke about issues including the economy, abortion rights and public safety.
The Republican challenger argued that cashless bail and the Halt Act need to be repealed.
"We need to make our streets safe again," Zeldin said.
The Democratic incumbent said the state has to continue getting guns out of the hands of young people and those who are severely mentally ill.
"What I have proposed with Mayor Adam is more cops - cameras in the subways," Hochul said
Early voting starts for the race starts on Oct. 29 and Election Day is Nov. 8.
