Long Island lawmakers say they'll support a proposal to allow casinos to operate upstate, but that they want something in return.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to allow casinos to operate in upstate New York to help its sagging economy. As the state Legislature nears the end of its session, many local lawmakers say they'll support the bill only if it allows for video slot machines at Long Island OTB parlors.

Supporters of video slot games say they would bring in an estimated $20 million per year for each county.

Former state assemblyman and News 12 political analyst Jerry Kremer expects the issue to be the center of intense back-room talks in Albany over the next two weeks.

If the Legislature decides to allow casinos upstate, the measure would still have to get the approval of New York voters. That referendum could take place as early as November.
