The Long Beach City Council has approved a ShotSpotter system for the entire city.

The council unanimously approved the implementation of the technology, which locates, evaluates and notifies police of gunfire in as little as 30 seconds.

On Friday, Long Beach police will fire test shots in controlled environments at three undisclosed locations throughout the city to ensure the ShotSpotter system is properly working. It is expected to be fully operational by the end of November.

Police say there have been 18 incidents involving gun violence in the city this year, including one in June when a stray bullet grazed a 4-year-old boy.
