A Locust Valley man has been sentenced to seven to 21 years in prison for the murder of his friend in 1985.
Police say 42-year-old Anthony Romeo beat and shot John Starkey at his Fire Island home, then covered him with porch furniture so that the body was not discovered for days. Romeo is currently serving 25 years in Canada for killing a cop in 1987. If he is paroled there, his sentence will continue in New York.
Romeo was not extradited to the United States to face these charges until recently because of a loophole in an international treaty with Canada. The loophole has since been closed, which made the sentencing possible more than 20 years after the crime.
