With summer approaching, local doctors are urging long islanders to wear sunscreen and UV protective clothing to protect themselves against skin cancer.

According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is the most common cancer diagnosed for young women between the ages of 25 to 29 years.

Dermatologist Nicole Golbari, of NYU Langone Health, developed melanoma at 29.

She says she had no family history of skin cancer and was not exposed to periods of sun exposure.

She underwent surgery to remove the skin and is now cancer free.

Golbari says melanoma can develop in anyone, no matter the skin color or age.

"This can happen to anyone at any age. It's important if you are concerned about an unusual mole or spot on your skin to get it checked out, catching it early is the key," explained Golbari.

Doctors say infants and children also need to be protected from the sun by wearing sun sunscreen and UV-protective clothing when outdoors.
