Fordham Road neighbors lend a hand during blizzard
5:16 PM: The storm slowed activity along Fordham Road, but it didn’t stop residents from helping each other dig out.
The busy street was quieter than usual, though many people were still outside shoveling sidewalks and pathways. Some residents said they were hoping to earn extra cash clearing snow, while others used the time to check on neighbors and make sure, they were safe.
“It doesn’t have to be for money because it really helps,” said Leon Santiago. “An older lady I know was walking out with heavy bags, and I started shoveling her walkway so she could get up the hill faster. You gotta help each other out. If I’m young enough to have the power, I can help the elderly, too.”
Others spent the day visiting relatives who live alone during the storm.
“Right now, I’m just trying to go visit my aunt because she’s alone,” said Oscar Ramirez. “I want to keep her company, especially during the snowstorm.”
Residents say the storm served as a reminder to check on neighbors and look out for one another during dangerous winter conditions.
