The president of the Long Island Rail Road on Monday apologized to riders impacted by last month's blizzard and said the railroad may purchase more snow removal equipment.
As News 12 has reported, the Jan. 23 blizzard caused three days of disruptions and left several trains stranded.
LIRR President Patrick Nowakowski said in a report to an MTA committee that crews were dealing with about 30 inches of snow. He says possible plans to buy more snow equipment could improve response times.
Commuter advocates say it's a start, but say the root of the problem is that the LIRR is dealing with aging infrastructure. Some also say the LIRR needs to focus on improving communication with riders when there are delays and cancellations.
An LIRR spokesman tells News 12 there are no numbers yet on how many pieces of snow removal equipment the railroad is looking to buy. He says any new equipment typically takes at least a year to order and get functioning.
