A couple was just inches from injury when a tree crashed into their house overnight during Ida.
Many Long Islanders are still dealing with damage after Ida brought strong winds and heavy rain.
Hundreds of trees came down in Lloyd Harbor, as well as a few telephone poles.
A tree went down into an elderly couple’s bedroom in the middle of the night while they were sleeping, missing their bed by only a few feet.
The couple says they didn’t even wake up from the crash, and they had to be woken up by their son who lives upstairs. He rushed into the bedroom to get them out.
“I'm looking at this tree and it was like a bad dream,” Ginger Murphy says. “He said, ‘A tree fell through the house, it fell on the roof.’ He said, ‘I thought you were dead.’”
The couple wasn’t injured and they say they feel extremly lucky to be alive.
Residents say it sounded like bombs were going off Wednesday night as several oak trees fell, some wondering if there was a tornado.
According to the National Weather Service, there was no evidence of a tornado, just extremely powerful winds.
PSEG Long Island crews continued to work Thursday night to restore power to the area. The power company said it was one of the hardest-hit areas.
