A Long Island teacher was arrested Saturday for having sexual relations with an underage boy he met online, police say.

According to authorities, Jason Berman, a history teacher at Half Hollow Hills West High School, met a 15-year-old boy from another school district on a Web site called manhunt.net, and the two arranged to meet in person. On Jan. 31, police say the 34-year-old teacher brought the teenager to his apartment in Commack and had sex with him.

Police say they found out about the incident after the boy reported it to someone at his school.

Berman was charged with having sexual relations with a minor and possessing child pornography, which was allegedly discovered on his computer.

?He's victimizing a child the same age as the children he teaches,? says Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Elena Tomaro. ?It's a very disturbing case.?

However, Berman?s attorney, Anthony LaPinta, says his client is widely respected by his students.

?Mr. Berman is nothing but an adored teacher,? LaPinta says.? He has nothing but a stellar record as a teacher.?

The Half Hollow Hills School District has issued a statement saying that administrators are fully cooperating with the authorities. The statement also says Berman will remain off the school campus during the investigation and legal proceedings.
