Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory researchers are working on a possible breakthrough in the war against breast cancer.
Researchers say they have discovered a new way of targeting breast cancer tumors without harming the rest of the normal cells.
Dr. David Spector, the team leader, says results in mice so far have been promising.
The team is using a drug to target a molecule that breast cancer tumors depend on, researchers say.
During experiments, the breast cancer tumor became less aggressive without impacting the rest of the normal cells.
Researchers are now working with human tumor samples to see if they respond the same way. Spector says preliminary findings look promising, but he cautions there is a long way to go.
If the research at the laboratory continues on its currently successful path, Spector says clinical trials could begin in about three years.
