The system is modeled after the National Blue Alert Act following the murders of NYPD Detectives Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu while sitting in their patrol car in Brooklyn in 2014.
When the alert is activated, the public will be asked to call 911 if they have information.
There are currently two other similar systems in place -- the Amber Alert for missing children and Silver Alert for missing vulnerable adults.
