Hundreds of high school seniors are getting the prom of their dreams Wednesday.
The LGBT Network hosted its annual LGBT Youth Prom at their Hauppauge location. This year, prom had a galaxy, out of this world theme.
Besides dancing, there's dinner, a dessert bar, talent performances by the teens and the crowning of this year's Rainbow Royalty Court. The court recognizes high school students who fought against homophobia and transphobia in their communities.
Tye Burrus, of Copiague, came back to the prom for a second year this year. He says it's vital for LGBTQ+ teens to have a space to feel safe and seen.
"At proms at school, you never know who might harass you or bully you or judge you for having a same sex partner or dressing in drag to prom,” he said. “It's really cool to be able to have a space where we can just be ourselves."
The LGBT Network has hosted this prom every year since 2001 for LGBTQ+ teens from across Long Island.
