Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy (D) reaffirmed Wednesday his determination to enact a two-part plan for dealing with illegal immigrants.
Starting in two weeks, Levy says federal immigration agents will stand post at the county jail to find illegal aliens and deport them after their sentences. The Suffolk County sheriff says about 180 undocumented individuals inhabit county jails, which represents roughly 10 percent of all prisoners and costs the county $9.5 million annually. The second part of Levy's plan revolves around anti-loitering legislation aimed at ridding roads of day laborers.
Latino activist Reverend Allan Ramirez says Levy's policies are election-year politicking and a waste of federal resources. Levy contends he's simply representing the public's wishes in a democratic fashion. Federal agents have performed the same tasks at Nassau County jails for a number of years.
