'Leaking hydrant' floods several blocks in Bed-Stuy

Residents in Bed-Stuy spent Monday cleaning up, after a fire hydrant flooded several streets.
The DEP said the hydrant started leaking shortly after 8 a.m. near Lewis and DeKalb avenues.
Maria Guterriez had to use cinderblocks to step out of her car and onto the curb, as the steady stream of water ran down her street.
“This is really, really horrible,” said Guterriez. “Nothing has stopped. The water’s still flowing.”
For nearly seven hours, discolored water rushed through at least three blocks, which made it difficult for people to access cars and sidewalks.
“I saw people trying to cross over, so I put [a wooden] pallet over there,” said Guterriez. “And they were able to get over to that side.”
Guterriez said, luckily, water did not get inside her home, but a few doors down, Frankie Rivera couldn’t say the same.
“My basement is already bad,” said Rivera. “There’s nothing we can do.”
He told News 12 that he is the porter for four buildings, as he tried to clear water and garbage.
“The garbage is floating all over the place,” said Rivera.
The DEP said it is assessing the damage.
As of Monday night, it was unknown exactly how many homes and businesses were impacted.
