Autopsy results released Wednesday showed a Central Islip landscaper who fell into a cesspool died from the weight of his lawnmower, not drowning.
Sergio Reyes, 34, was riding a stand-up lawnmower at a Commack Road home in Deer Park when the ground above the cesspool collapsed Tuesday afternoon. The autopsy revealed pressure from the mower against Reyes' chest stopped his breathing.
Sewage experts said this isn't the first time a cesspool has collapsed. They said an indication a cesspool needs replacement is ground that appears to be sinking. Many times, however, they said homeowners aren't given such notice and the ground simply caves in.
To find out whether one's home uses a sewer system or cesspool, residents can contact their town government.
