State lawmakers are preparing a fight to persuade the state's largest insurer to change its mind on writing new homeowner policies.
Allstate Insurance wants to cut the amount of homes it insures on Long Island, New York City and Westchester due to the probability of natural disasters. Allstate officials say the financial hit the company has taken from hurricanes Katrina and Rita has led to the reduction of insured homes in what they consider high-risk areas.
State officials are furious with the plan, saying it will have a ripple effect on the rest of the industry. Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy (R-Mineola) says homeowners that seek insurance elsewhere will probably have to pay higher premiums.
