The steak knife was found in a backpack after another student told an administrator, according to the district.
The incident happened at Robert Moses Middle School.
Superintendent Ken Graham says the student will not be in school Thursday and will be disciplined.
A letter that went home to parents also mentions rumors of a bomb threat at the school.
Those rumors are not true, the superintendent says.
