As thousands descend upon Long Island this fall for the Ryder Cup in Bethpage, K-9 units will be on hand to help keep people safe.
They're an important part of law enforcement on Long Island and are often at popular events throughout the year.
"We just did the air show – so we'll go out there prior to any crowds coming out and we'll do a lot of sweeps to make sure no one left any explosives out there,” said Trooper Robert Galarza.
Fabio, a 7-year-old Dutch shepherd, and other K-9 dogs go through a 20-week training period learning how to detect explosive devices and are re-certified twice a year.
The K-9 unit is already preparing to help with security for the Ryder Cup golf competition this fall at Bethpage State Park.
"It's an international event. We've got people coming over from Europe, Americans coming from all over the country,” said Evan Crowder, the tournament’s operations manager.
The PGA and state parks are actively coordinating with state and county police on security protocols for the event.
The golf competition will be held Sept. 26-28 at the storied Bethpage Black course.
