A driver was sentenced today for leaving the scene of a fatal hit-and-run late last year.

Joseph Plummer was sentenced to two to six years for striking and killing Scott Wayte last December. Wayte, a father of two, was walking to a Riverhead restaurant to celebrate his 50th birthday.

Prosecutors say Plummer hit Wayte, then drove off with a cracked windshield. They say he later covered the car with a pool liner to hide it from police.

Although prosecutors say they believe Plummer spent the day drinking vodka before getting behind the wheel, there was no evidence of alcohol when he was arrested several days later.

Suffolk County District Attorney Tom Spota calls incidents like this slaughter on the highways. He's urging the state Legislature to enact stricter penalties in similar cases.
