National lacrosse powerhouse Johns Hopkins University announced it let go of head coach and Long Island native Dave Pietramala Wednesday.
The program announced the "mutual parting" as the program says it is looking to "move the program in a different direction."
The Hicksville native spent 19 years at the helm of Johns Hopkins, bringing his team to the NCAA Tournament in all but one season. He brought the Blue Jays national championship wins in 2005 and 2007.
Over his time with the program, which included multiple seasons as an assistant, he coached 93 All-Americans and won over 200 games. He is also the only person in Division I lacrosse to win a national championship as a coach and player, as he won the 1987 national title with Johns Hopkins.
Though Johns Hopkins appeared in each of the last six NCAA Tournaments, the Blue Jays suffered first round exits in three of the last four.
Johns Hopkins says the school will immediately begin a national search for a new coach. The move comes as the 2020 lacrosse season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
