John White was found guilty Saturday of two charges in the August 2006 death of 17-year-old Daniel Cicciaro.
White was found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and criminal possession of a weapon. He now faces up to 22 years behind bars.
White was found innocent of a third charge of reckless endangerment.
"This was never about race," said Joanne Cicciaro, the victim's mother.
Prosecutors contended White, a black man, intentionally shot the white teen in the face. However, White testified he thought the teen and four friends came to his house with the intent of harming his son after a fight. White also claims the gun went off accidentally."What this jury has done is basically nullify 400 years of history," said defense attorney Fred Brewington.
On Friday the jury was deadlocked on the felony charge, but the judge pressed the them to continue. The jury had emerged from deliberations earlier on Saturday to rehear the testimony of White, his wife and his son. White is due back for sentencing on February 21.
