Officials are reminding New Yorkers this weekend that social distancing guidelines still need to be followed even while spending time outdoors.
Nassau police officers were on horseback at Eisenhower Park. It was one of the tools being used to enforce social distancing this weekend as many Long Islanders came out to enjoy the warm spring weather.
The Nassau Police Department says it's taking a gentle approach to enforcing social distancing, which means it will first remind residents about the guidelines that are in place, and then issue summonses if they refuse to comply.
"Altogether we've had 1,700 complaints. And out of those 1,700 complaints we've only had to issue 22 appearance tickets. So that's 22 people that just did not want to follow the rules,” says Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder.
In Suffolk County, despite protests on Friday where many ignored social distancing rules, only one person has received a non-compliance ticket so far.
And on a conference call Sunday afternoon, Police Commissioner Geraldine Hart said the protesters were asked to comply with the state's guidelines.
"This is all brand new and unique for all of us. We're going to continue to remind them to social distance, and we'll do that as we did on Friday with our personnel from the precincts," says Hart.
So far, no one in Nassau or Suffolk has been arrested for violating social distancing guidelines.
