Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders faced off Thursday night in Brooklyn in their final debate just days before the New York primary. News 12 Long Island's Shari Einhorn asked Long Islanders what they want to see from the candidates leading up to the elections.
Nassau County's Democratic chair Jay Jacobs says Clinton has demonstrated that she is the stronger candidate, and he says he's convinced that will resonate with voters.
"They want an optimist," Jacobs says. "They want someone who's going to tell them what the future will look like and how we would get there. That is why Hillary Clinton stands out separate and distinct."
At Adelphi University, some students tell News 12 they think Bernie Sanders is more appealing to younger voters. Junior Kindeya Chiaro says she used to support Clinton, but changed her tune once she got wind of Sanders' campaign. This year will be her first time voting.
Others say that both Democratic hopefuls have much to offer. Former Suffolk County Legislator Jon Cooper says he will throw his support behind whoever is chosen to be the party's nominee. He adds that he's convinced that either Clinton or Sanders can beat whichever candidate winds up with the Republican nomination.
New York's primary elections will be held Tuesday, April 19.
