Island Harvest held its 14th annual Bethpage Turkey Drive.
The drive helps thousands of Long Islanders serve a Thanksgiving meal to their family each year.
With inflation at a 40-year high, grocery store food costs are up over 11% and the average cost of a Thanksgiving dinner for 10 is 12.6% higher.
The drive, which took place today at Bethpage Federal Credit Union’s headquarters in Bethpage, collected more than 3,725 turkeys, 31,000 pounds of food and more than 32,000 in cash donations. Last year, the drive collected 2,400 turkeys.
The last time more than 3,700 turkeys were donated was back in 2011.
These donations will go directly to Island Harvest, which will help supply Thanksgiving meals to the more than 300,000 food-insecure Long Islanders through its distribution network of over 400 food pantries, soup kitchens, and other feeding programs on Long Island.
