County Executive Ed Mangano says construction at the Nassau Coliseum is underway and is progressing along nicely.

News 12 Long Island got an inside look Wednesday at how the renovations are moving along. Mangano says it's important that the public know that construction is ongoing and is expected to be completed on time and on budget. He adds that architects and engineers felt the 44-year-old complex had great bones and didn't need to be completely torn down.

Mangano says a basketball team will play at the Coliseum. In addition, the Islanders are on tap to play two exhibition games and four regular season games at the Coliseum when renovations are completed.

Architects tell News 12 that there will be new LED lighting in the Coliseum, in addition to a brand-new sound system. They are reducing the seating capacity from about 15,000 down to 13,000 to improve the view for fans.

Costs of the project and operation of the refurbished Coliseum will be in the hands of the new operators, not Nassau taxpayers, as had been the case in the past.

The $260 million project is expected to be finished by March 2017.
