Authorities say another illegal dumping site has been discovered in Suffolk County, this time in a protected Pine Barrens area of Miller Place.

Dozens of tires, mattresses, piles of compost and other items were found strewn about a wooded lot along Miller Place Yaphank Road.

"The Pine Barrens was protected because of the pure underground drinking water, and letting garbage leech into the ground is absolutely irresponsible, ugly and inhumane," says Richard Amper, executive director of the LI Pine Barrens Society.

He added, "When it rains, it recharges our pure drinking water. That water isn't pure anymore. It's contaminated with whatever was in the garbage that got dumped here." 

It's the latest illegal dumping site to be found on Long Island. As News 12 has reported, others have been found in areas like Center Moriches, Uniondale and Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood.

Some suspect the dumping has been done by businesses looking to cut costs on disposal fees.

A Medford business owner says he spotted his stolen kiosk among the debris when he saw footage of the dumped materials on News 12 Long Island. "Hopefully the police can put the two together and nail them for illegal dumping and also nail them for stealing my kiosk," says Michael DiMarco, of Country Fair Entertainment Park.

In a statement, Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine says he's "hopeful the county will clean up this site and go after those who did this." 

News 12 reached out to Suffolk County for comment and was referred to the district attorney's office.
