Hundreds of Long Islanders attended the lighting of the Big Duck in Flanders this evening.
More than 300 residents and local officials came to the event, held along Route 24, to commemorate the 23rd annual holiday tradition.
The lighting of the duck, which was built in 1931, started simply when some residents began placing a wreath around the duck's neck. It turned into a larger celebration when Suffolk County acquired the duck.
