A Hicksville man was arrested Saturday evening in a police standoff that lasted for several hours inside a home on Ohio Street.

Authorities say a 44-year-old man told police that he and a 56-year-old woman had been assaulted by John Howell.

When authorities got to the scene, police say Howell had barricaded himself with the female victim inside the residence.

Police say the 56-year-old victim, who neighbors say is his mother, managed to negotiate her release.

"They shot a flash bang into the house and six armored SWAT team officers ran in the house," says a neighbor who lives on the block.

Police say they found Howell hiding in the attic of the home. He was taken into police custody.

Howell is charged with several counts of assault, criminal possession of a weapon, menacing and unlawful imprisonment.
