A Holtsville resident is recovering after being struck by a hit-and-run driver who crashed into his property in the early hours of Friday morning.
The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Woodland Avenue.
Cellphone video from a neighbor shows what happened after a white pickup truck slammed into a residential fence and knocked down a Town of Brookhaven street sign.
The homeowner, Anthony Scotti, rushed outside — only to be hit by the same truck as the driver fled the scene.
“I realized I was in the wrong place. I just didn’t think he was going to leave,” Scotti said.
Scotti suffered a swollen and cut-up ankle but says he’s grateful the injuries weren’t more severe. In the video, the driver is seen struggling to get the vehicle back in gear after the crash, the sound of scraping metal clearly audible. When Scotti confronted him and urged him not to drive away, the driver accelerated — striking him before fleeing.
“He hit me in my left lower leg,” Scotti recounted. “It all happened within 20, 30 seconds. And once he realized he could drive, he did indeed take off.”
In his rush to escape, the driver left behind a sandal — a passenger in the vehicle left behind a shoe. Suffolk County police are now investigating and have yet to make any arrests.
“My injury will heal,” Scotti said, “but at the same time, someone like that shouldn’t be on the streets — someone who has no concern for others.”
As of Monday, Scotti says he still has significant swelling in his ankle and will be seeing a doctor for further evaluation.
