Hither Hills takes a serious hit from weekend nor'easter

The beach at Hither Hills State Park in Montauk looks very different now than it looked on Friday before the nor'easter wreaked havoc.
Tim Watson, with New York State Parks, says Hither Hills lost about 5 feet of beach - and where there was once sloping sand, there are now steep drop-offs, ranging from 10 to 15 feet.
"It's terrible," said beachgoer James Loris, of Sound Beach.
Loris said he's been going to the beach for years and remembers a different landscape.
"We had at least 40 yards of sand...A lot of sand. The bluffs are halfway gone, so it's dangerous," says Loris.
"The beach historically would build back up a little bit but not like this. We need help. We need funding, we need help," said Watson.
The campgrounds, which closed for the storm, reopened Monday at 3 p.m.
