A funeral with a full police escort, honor guard and a helicopter fly-by took place in Hempstead Saturday for the baby boy found dead on a street earlier in the month.
The baby was discovered by a neighbor on Sunset Drive on March 4. Authorities say the infant was run over so many times it took medical tests to determine its sex. So many Long Islanders were touched by the story and felt the need to attend his funeral.
He was named Michael Hope, the first name given to him by the man who found him. Michael will be buried along side 87 other abandoned babies. All of them have been given the same last name of Hope, in the hopes that their tragedies will prevent the loss of other young lives. AMT Children of Hope is a group that organized the funeral and provides support and counseling to pregnant women who may be thinking of abandoning their babies.
