News 12 Long Island has learned that the Hempstead school district could soon see a slash of 100 staff positions in an effort to trim its budget.
The proposed 2015-2016 Hempstead budget includes $190 million in spending, up 2.7 percent from last year, but proposed cuts of 100 employees. Some of the cuts will be teachers.
The possible job cuts come as the Hempstead district is dealing with more than 1,500 new students this school year, many of them immigrant children.
School board trustee Shelly Brazley says the district needs more help.
Last night's school board meeting was a time for the public to voice their concerns about the spending plan and the proposed cuts.
