Two people were taken into custody and one person is in the hospital after a stolen SUV crashed into a box truck, Hempstead police say.
Hempstead police told News 12 that they were following an SUV with Kentucky license plates that was reported stolen from Front Street Tuesday morning.
When officers initiated a traffic stop, they say the driver fled – striking two parked cars, a Hempstead police vehicle and almost struck a Hempstead police officer.
Authorities say an officer then discharged his weapon, firing two shots at the vehicle. Those gunshots did not hit anyone.
The shots were fired on Front Street, close to where the road intersects at Peninsula Boulevard.
Police say the stolen vehicle was traveling at high speed on Westbury Boulevard when it crashed into a box truck near Fairview Boulevard.
The box truck driver suffered a broken leg, and needed to be extricated.
The occupants of the SUV, a male and female, were taken into police custody. Authorities have not yet released their names or the charges against them.
