An event honoring the achievements of African Americans was held in Hempstead Thursday.

Dozens of families gathered at Kennedy Memorial Park to commemorate Black History Month.

African American poets, writers and artists throughout history were celebrated.

Several awards were also given out to those who have made a difference in the community.
