Nassau residents who are struggling to navigate how to apply for tax credits and exemptions can meet one on one with experts in a series of seminars throughout the year.
Nassau's Homeowner Exemption Liaison Program provides direct assistance from members of the county's Department of Assessment.
"We want to be able to educate those who are really unable to find their way through this process," said John McQuade, assistant Nassau County assessor. "We like to reach out to constituents in their towns rather than them coming to Mineola."
The workshops largely cater to seniors in libraries and community centers. They take place multiple times per month across the county. Assessment Department staff field questions on several topics, including completing and filing applications for veterans, senior citizens, Cold War veterans, volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers, and limited-income disability exemptions, according to Nassau county officials.
Linda Anderson-Pierce, a longtime West Hempstead resident, says a recent HELP seminar in Franklin Square provided her with a comfortable venue to ask questions about her tax bill.
"Going into a county office sometimes feels a little confusing and intimidating," Anderson-Pierce said. "Coming here, at least it's quiet and it's reasonable. And so I feel more relaxed. I don't feel quite as anxious, you know?"
