Hundreds of people gathered to pay tribute to a 10-year-old who died during a Little League game in April.
Lazar LaPenna was a member of a camp family at Malibu Beach Camp on Lido Beach. His camp family made a promise that he would never be forgotten and named their new field in his memory.
The Lazar LaPenna Field #9 in Lido Beach serves to honor the memory of the child who died of an epileptic seizure while playing the game he loved
Lazar LaPenna's mother, Monique LaPenna, unveiled the plaque bearing her son's name as she made her first public appearance since his death.
"It's bittersweet - every moment of every day is sad," Monique LaPenna says. "And while we love celebrating his life and keeping his name and honoring him, it's tough."
Lazar LaPenna played ball as a summer camper at the Malibu Beach Camp since he was 4.
Malibu Beach Camp Director Ilissa Epstein says naming the camp's new ballfield after Lazar Lapenna will keep his spirit alive.
"It was really the perfect tribute for him so that when we're here playing baseball or any other sport games, we always remember him every day," Epstein says.
At the end of the ceremony, Lazar LaPenna's father Gregg LaPenna paid tribute to his son by rounding the bases and sliding into home plate.
The late child's parents say this is a tribute their son would have loved.
"He'd be over the moon," Monique LaPenna says. "He'd be over the moon."
The LaPenna family hopes when children play on the field, they will be inspired to live life to the fullest just as Lazar LaPenna did.
