A school board hearing has been scheduled for Thursday in the case of three suspended Deer Park High School Junior Varsity basketball players accused of bullying another player.
One 14-year-old student is accused of sexually abusing an eighth-grade teammate in the team locker room. Authorities say two other players may have been involved in what could amount to months of harassment. Deer Park High School has canceled the JV season in response to the incident, though school officials deny any hazing occurred.
Many students said they were upset but not surprised by the assault. One student said hazing and bullying is a common practice for high school athletes. Some Long Island Schools have begun giving coaches special training to handle hazing and watch for its warning signs.
